Peter Hanson of Sweden has surged to the lead of the BMW International Open in
Munich today, sitting at 9-under-par, two strokes ahead of South Africa\'s David
Frost and England\'s Nick Dougherty, who had a strong showing last week at Oakmont
during the U.S. Open.

First round co-leader José-Filipe Lima of Portugal is also tied at 7-under-par,
following a spectacular first round that saw him card a dramatic eagle on No. 18 to
sit atop the leaderboard.

A host of players are lurking a few shots off the lead during second round action,
including England\'s Paul Casey (another strong performer at Oakmont) at 6-under,
Henrik Stenson of Sweden (5-under) and first round co-leader Raphaël Jacquelin
(5-under), winner of this year\'s BMW Asian Open in Shanghai.

World No. 5 Ernie Els, fourth last week at Oakmont, is sitting at 5-under-par.

Though chasing Hanson right now, Lima has been the big story so far in the
tournament. The 25-year-old has missed the cut in his last six PGA European Tour
events and sits at 216th on the tour\'s Order of Merit.

\"I hit a very bad drive on the first hole but in a funny way I think that help relax
me a little bit because I was a little stressed after the way I have been playing,\"
Lima told reporters. \"I changed some things on my swing and I started the year very
badly, missing a lot of cuts - a good round today is very good for me and my
confidence. Obviously there is a long way to go until Sunday but I will try to keep
playing like that.\"

Hanson has made up some serious ground, carding, so far, five birdies and no bogeys
so far today through 14 holes.

Lima, who was scheduled to tee off at 2 p.m. German time Friday, hopes his putter
remains hot. After an opening bogey yesterday, he went on to card four birdies and
two eagles for his opening round 65.
